Fire, drums and marshmallows

Coming together around fire is deeply engrained in our community and ancestral psyche.

Women would come together to cook, tell stories, take care of children and elders.

Community would come together in the evenings to celebrate or simply honour the seasons, the elements, special occasions.

Musical instruments would come out and so would singing, chanting and dancing.

Movement and music were essential components of our lives and development of speech, culture and society.

The ongoing trend of urbanisation has taken us away from bon fires into concrete clad cities with minimal glimpses of nature and ability to create a fire. Fire has been limited to man-made plastic fire imitating plastic candles or at best barbeques and fireplaces.

There is something primal about the smell of burning wood, the all-penetrating smoke and the mystic atmosphere created.

We want to leave pockets of garden where we can have safe bon fires while singing, playing drums and using other available kids instruments.

The highlight for kids - marshmallows of course!

Not quite sure how to make marshmallows more healthy and “sustainable” yet - any suggestions please let us know! On the path to sustainability, we are leaving space for conscious little indulgences in spirit of the fire magic and mystery.

Here we are in a #Shakti #Circle with Michelle J and our visiting friend Yogini Kamadevi trying to sing nursery rhymes, improvised verses and pop melodies.
